When the whole world is busy with the coming of Christmas a week from now, the KPop community was shocked and hit hard with the sudden passing of one of its notable and passionate artist and lead vocalist of nine year-old boy band, SHINee.
Why oh why did you leave us all too soon Kim Jong Hyun?
He was found unconscious in the early evening of December 18th at his rented residential hotel. Reports indicate that Hyung apparently took his own life through carbon monoxide poisoning as burned coal briquette on a frying pan was discovered in his place. It is said this is a common suicide method in South Korea where high rates of incidents as such affecting individuals and celebrities.
Jong Hyun's talent agency released this heartbreaking official statement:
‘This is SM Entertainment. We are sorry to be the bearer of such tragic, heartbreaking news. ‘On December 18th, SHINee’s Jonghyun left us very suddenly.
‘He was discovered unconscious at a residence in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul and was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.
‘Our sadness cannot compare to the pain of his family, who had to say goodbye to a son and a brother, but we have spent a long time with him, and the SHINee members along with the SM Entertainment staff are all in deep mourning and shock.
‘Jonghyun loved music more than anybody else and he was an artist who did everything to perform his absolute best on stage.
‘It breaks our heart to have to bring this news to fans who loved Jonghyun so much. ‘Please refrain from reporting on rumours and guesswork so the family of the deceased can honour him in peace.
‘As per the wish of the family, the funeral will be held quietly with his relatives and company colleagues.
SHINee made their debut in 2008 and have been called the Princes of K-Pop due to their complex dance routines and incredible live vocals, earning huge hits with songs including Sherlock, Replay, Ring Ding Dong and Dream Girl.
Kim began composing songs for the group a year later.
Jonghyun is survived by band members Onew, Key, Minho and Taemin, who were about to turn ten years old in the business. Had he not passed on, SHINee would have been a first KPop band to celebrate a decade without replacements in its original members.
Twenty-seven year old Jonghyun just had his solo concerts in Seoul a week before this tragic news with his band mates cheering him in the crowd. He did not show any signs he was going through personal and bothersome concerns.
Hours before he passed on, Jonghyun sent these heartbreaking text messages to his sister:
‘It’s been too hard. Please send me off. Tell everyone I’ve had a hard time. This is my last goodbye.’
Recent developments indicate that Jonghyun's sister told reports that his brother was struggling and going through depression.
S.M. Entertainment said in a statement on Tuesday that it was preparing a public mortuary for the star's fans, K-pop news site Allkpop reported.
From noon on Tuesday, fans were allowed to pay respects to the artist, whose body was in a room on the first floor of the Asan Medical Centre Funeral Home in Seoul.
SHINee's millions of fans (Shawols) have poured out their heart tugging messages and tributes to Jong Hyun in their social media. The KPop community and its celebrated singers and boy bands such as BTS, Girls Generation. EXO and other groups have already expressed their utmost condolences and shared unforgettable moments with Jong Hyung.
