5 Ways to stay safe during the holidays, according to the PNP

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its game this holiday season. Through its Office of Communications and Electronics Services (CES), the PNP urges Filipinos to dial 911 and press 1 for emergencies. With upgraded emergency response technology, the PNP promises faster assistance—arriving at the scene in just 3 to 5 minutes.

CES Director Police Brigadier General Warren Gaspar Tolito emphasized that the holidays bring heightened risks, including accidents, medical emergencies, and crimes. “Increased traffic, electrical overloads, improper fireworks use, and overindulgence can trigger emergencies,” he said.

The good news? The PNP now uses advanced 911 Call Handling System technology, similar to what’s in the U.S. and Europe. This system allows them to accurately locate and assist distressed citizens almost instantly. Tolito proudly shared that first responders can now reach emergencies within minutes.

Remember the emergency hotline: Dial 911, press 1

In case of emergencies, call 911 and press 1. The system will pinpoint your location and deploy help within 3-5 minutes.

Lock and secure your home before heading out

Before leaving, make sure doors and windows are locked. Leave some lights on to deter potential robbers.

Be cautious with appliances and decorations

Avoid overloading outlets with Christmas lights or leaving appliances unattended. Fires often start this way.

Stay alert on the road

Don’t drink and drive. Watch out for traffic and ensure your vehicle is in good condition before traveling.

Observe details during emergencies

If you’re reporting a crime, note key details like suspects’ appearance, clothing, or vehicles involved. Every bit of information helps.

Tolito added, “If you’re reporting a crime in progress, observe details like the suspects’ appearance, clothing, or vehicles involved. Every detail counts.”

The holidays are a busy time for PNP’s emergency services. Common incidents include vehicular accidents, medical emergencies, domestic violence, robberies, and thefts. Fires, often caused by unattended appliances or overloaded Christmas lights, are also a concern.

To stay safe, General Tolito advises Filipinos to secure homes before leaving, keep lights on to deter robbers, and exercise caution when opening doors to strangers. “At the first sign of trouble, call 911 and press 1. Our responders are ready to act within minutes,” he assured.

This quick-response initiative stems from the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s Revitalized Emergency 911 project. Powered by NGA 911 LLC, the system aims to ensure safer, more enjoyable holidays for Filipinos.

With the PNP’s enhanced emergency capabilities, General Tolito reminds everyone to stay vigilant and responsible. “Your safety is our priority. Let’s work together to make this season safe and happy for all.”
