Alex Eala is one win away from becoming the first Filipino to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in decades.
The 21-year-old tennis phenom defeated defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek of Poland, 7-6(9), 6-2, to advance to the round of 16 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Eala’s victory sets up a clash with Italy’s Jasmine Paolini on Monday. The winner moves to the quarterfinals, where a Filipino has not stood since Felicisimo Ampon at the 1953 French Open.
An emotional milestone
What made the win memorable was not just the scoreline, but the moment after. Eala started her post-match interview as an emotional wreck before collecting herself to deliver the line that broke the internet.
“For someone who grew up in the Philippines … I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks, my light-up shoes and chubby cheeks,” she said, sobbing. “To that little girl, this means everything.”
The Centre Court crowd gave her a standing ovation. President Marcos later hailed the run as a “true inspiration,” while tennis legend Billie Jean King called Eala an inspiration after they shared a moment at Wimbledon.
One round away from history
Paolini awaits in the fourth round. Eala already beat the Italian earlier this year in Dubai. The path beyond that gets no easier, with Czech Linda Noskova, the highest remaining seed, lurking in the quarterfinals.
“I may be emotional right now, but I’m not satisfied yet,” Eala said.
For now, the Philippines watches. And for the first time in a long time, a Filipino tennis player is must-see sports at its biggest stage.
