MAKATI, Philippines (Jul 2026) — Pinoys are getting a lot more adventurous with their vacation plans, ditching traditional tourist traps for unexpected international getaways. Data from global travel service provider Trip.com reveals a massive shift in how local travelers are planning their upcoming holiday breaks, balancing a love for familiar spots with a sudden hunger for discovery.
Goodbye comfort zones, hello adventure
While regional hubs remain popular, a growing number of Pinoy travelers are exploring places that were once considered niche markets. Booking data from the first half of 2026 shows explosive year on year growth for unexpected destinations. Palau leads the pack with a staggering 663% spike in bookings, followed closely by Oman at 482% and Saudi Arabia at 145%.
Other long haul and regional destinations are also seeing a major surge in interest, including Vietnam, Australia and Canada. Even when visiting favorite countries, Pinoys are looking past traditional entry points. For instance, bookings for Da Nang in Vietnam jumped by 483%, while flights to Hanoi grew by 145%, showing that travelers want a deeper look at the countries they visit.
The classic favorites are still winning
Despite the rising interest in new frontiers, classic Asian cities still hold a firm grip on the Pinoy traveler. The top spots for outbound international bookings remain Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok and Taipei.
Data from the Department of Tourism indicates that this steady preference for short haul international trips is heavily driven by affordability, accessibility and convenience. Shorter flight times and better value make these destinations ideal for quick holiday getaways.
It is all about the experience
Where Pinoys go depends heavily on what they can do once they land. Modern travelers are prioritizing unique experiences over simple sightseeing itineraries, whether they are traveling as couples, families or friend groups.
Globally recognized theme parks and entertainment hubs dominate the most booked attractions. Hong Kong Disneyland remains the top international attraction booked by Pinoys, followed by Ocean Park Hong Kong, Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Japan. Seasonal promotions, like the Hong Kong Summer Fun 2026 campaign running through August, are also successfully drawing in crowds by bundling hotel and travel deals together.
As the peak holiday rush approaches, this shifting mindset shows a new generation of Pinoy travelers who are confident, well informed and ready to see the world on their own terms.
