QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Jul 2026) — High-grade pollution tracking does not have to be expensive or fragile, and the Robust Optical Aerosol Monitor, or ROAM, is proving exactly that. As the first Pinoy-made air quality monitoring device, this homegrown innovation is designed to withstand the country's harshest environments.

An air microscope built for the streets

Developed by Dr. Len Herald Lim from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science’s Institute of Chemistry, alongside Engr. Paul Alexander Darvin from UP Los Baños, the device operates differently from traditional commercial monitors. Instead of relying on easily clogged components, the device functions essentially as an air microscope, counting individual pollution particles in the air.

During the sixth Innovation Impact Stories webinar, Lim explained that the setup does not require precision-machined miniature parts, keeping production and maintenance costs low. This design choice makes it ideal for highly polluted environments that typically damage standard monitoring units used by industry giants and government agencies.

Proven to survive the elements

The device has already undergone rigorous field testing. Its first long-term deployment lasted six to eight months in a heavily dusty environment in Cauayan, Isabela. While the team initially expected the device to return clogged and broken, the unit remained fully functional because its internal design avoids narrow pinholes.

Another unit achieved similar success in South Cotabato, where it remained fully operational after being left unattended for nearly six months. Because repairs are inexpensive, Lim noted that some people initially doubted its quality, but local government units have quickly realized its value. Local governments are currently the primary adopters of the technology, helping deploy the units to protect public health.

The initiative highlights how local scientific research can transition from academic theory into practical tools that address real-world challenges across the Philippines.
