Meralco’s residential rate climbed to ₱14.8261 per kWh in July 2026, up from ₱14.4833 in June, the fourth straight monthly increase this year. For a household already paying ₱6,000 a month, that is another ₱200-plus a year leaving the wallet. So the question is no longer “is solar cool” but “does the math actually work?” We ran the numbers.
The rising cost of doing nothing
Meralco publishes these adjustments monthly. Here is the residential rate trajectory from its own advisories:

At ₱14.83 per kWh, a household using 200 kWh a month now pays roughly ₱2,965, while a 400 kWh household pays around ₱5,930. The generation charge, which Meralco passes through with no markup, is the biggest driver and shows no sign of easing as fuel costs and peso weakness persist.
What a solar system actually costs
For a home with a ~₱6,000 monthly bill (about 405 kWh), you need roughly 3.4 kWp of panels to cover 90 percent of use, assuming 4.5 sun-hours a day and 80 percent system performance. Installed cost runs about ₱70,000 per kWp, or roughly ₱236,000 for the hardware and labor, based on 2025 to 2026 installer pricing guides.

Net metering is what makes solar pay. Under the ERC net metering program your excess daytime generation is exported to the grid and credited to your bill at the generation rate (about ₱8.39 per kWh). The law covers systems under 100 kWp, and recent ERC simplifications have cut processing time. The connection and permit figures above come from Solaric’s net metering guide, which places fees between ₱8,500 and ₱45,000 plus local government charges. Excess generation is also counted toward Renewable Energy Market certificates, traded at about ₱241.56 per 1,000 kWh.
The ROI computation

After the 4.2 year payback, every peso of that ₱5,400 a month is money back in your pocket. Panels are warrantied for 20 to 25 years, so the back half of the system’s life is nearly free power.

Is it time to switch?
For a ₱6,000-a-month household, the answer is yes if you plan to stay in the home beyond five years. The payback is under 4.5 years, the hardware is proven, and net metering is law. The catch is upfront cash: ₱270,500 is not pocket change. Many installers now offer 0 percent or low-interest plans, which shorten the effective payback further because you avoid the full upfront hit.
If your bill is smaller, the math still works but slower. A ₱3,000-a-month home needs about 1.7 kWp (~₱145,000 plus fees), paying back in roughly 5 to 6 years. Below ₱2,000 a month, solar becomes harder to justify unless you have a specific need like backup power during outages.
The honest take: solar will not make you rich, but at ₱14.83 per kWh and climbing, doing nothing costs more every single year. For most mid-size Filipino households, the switch is no longer a green luxury. It is the cheaper option.
