BINI from Coachella to tourism ambassador: how P-pop became Philippine soft power

BINI made history as the first Filipino act at Coachella in April, then became a DOT tourism ambassador in July, turning one group into both cultural export and travel pitchman.

BINI did not just play Coachella this year. The nation’s girl group became the first Filipino act ever to perform at the festival, then parlayed that global moment into a new role at home: official tourism ambassador of the Philippines. It is a one-two punch of soft power that turns a single group into both a cultural export and a domestic pitchman for travel.

The Coachella debut came on April 10 and 17, 2026, on the Mojave stage, where BINI opened with a warm “Mabuhay” and ran through hits while debuting new music from their Signals EP. Fans showed up in Filipinianas and waved Filipino flags a full half hour before showtime. By July 3, Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay had named BINI a DOT tourism ambassador, and later that month SB19 joined them, making P-pop the face of the department’s “Discover More to Love” push.

From Mojave to Malacañang

The throughline is diaspora. BINI’s Coachella set gave Filipino-Americans and global fans a reason to feel home from across an ocean, and the tourism role aims to convert that pride into actual visits, to Philippine destinations, food, and heritage. As with SB19, the DOT is betting that a loyal fandom is a more effective travel-promotion channel than a traditional ad campaign, reaching audiences a tourism bureau rarely touches directly.

Why BINI is the right face for it

BINI is not a one-week story. Since their 2020 debut they have steadily carried P-pop onto the global stage, and Coachella was the milestone they had openly dreamed about for years. Pairing that international credibility with a domestic ambassadorship lets the group represent the Philippines “from the Philippines to the world,” the same phrase SB19 used, and gives the tourism department two of the biggest names in P-pop carrying the same message.

What comes next

The department said more BINI-led campaigns and events will be announced in the coming months, alongside SB19. For now, the headline is simple: the first Filipino act to conquer Coachella is now officially inviting the world to come home. With SB19 also on board, P-pop is no longer just music, it is Philippine tourism strategy.

Based on Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, Inquirer, and the Department of Tourism announcement (July 3, 2026). BINI members are Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena.
