Relentless monsoon rains that submerge streets for days are not just random bad luck, but the result of a massive atmospheric highway streaming water vapor across oceans.

A team of local and international weather scientists successfully mapped a continent-spanning moisture conveyor belt that triggers extreme southwest monsoon rainfall and massive flooding in the country. By looking into the data, researchers can now spot these high-impact weather events days before the heaviest downpours actually hit.

Unlocking the secrets of the Habagat

For generations, Pinoys have known that distant typhoons can cause the southwest monsoon, locally called Habagat, to dump endless rain even if the storm never makes landfall. However, the exact science behind this relationship remained a mystery.

To solve this, researchers from the Ateneo VORTEX Research Lab, Manila Observatory, PAGASA, and Tokyo Metropolitan University analyzed 53 cases of extreme Habagat rainfall linked to tropical cyclones between 1981 and 2023.

Instead of treating each storm as an isolated incident, the team looked for recurring patterns. They discovered a specific atmospheric setup: a supercharged Habagat, a tropical cyclone sitting northeast of the Philippines, and unique atmospheric conditions that open the floodgates for massive amounts of water vapor.

Together, these elements create a moisture conveyor belt. This atmospheric corridor pulls water vapor all the way from the Indian Ocean, drags it across Southeast Asia, and dumps it straight onto the Philippines, particularly over western Luzon.

Better warnings for future storms

The study reveals that this moisture highway takes several days to build up. Because the system develops well ahead of the heaviest rains, meteorologists can use existing operational weather forecasts to recognize the pattern early. This gives communities more time to prepare for potential flooding.

The full study, titled “Synoptic conditions favoring tropical cyclone-enhanced southwest monsoon high precipitation events in the Philippines,” was featured in the July 2026 issue of the journal Atmospheric Research.
