ALAMINOS CITY, Philippines (Sept. 2026) – A 20-minute student musical born out of Far Eastern University, “Kahel,” is heading to Pangasinan to inspire local dreamers through cinema.
The award-winning short film will screen on Sept. 5 at the Don Leopoldo Sison Convention Center as part of the 6th Hundred Islands Film Festival (HIFF 2026). Brought to Alaminos City through the Cultural Center of the Philippines Lakbay Sine program, the movie arrives fresh off its run as a finalist at the 38th CCP Gawad Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (CCP Gawad Alternatibo).
A story made for Pinoy dreamers
Produced by student production team Kuwerdas, “Kahel” follows Elias (Justin Abalos), a regular office worker who steps away from his 9-to-5 routine to pursue his musical dreams in the city. His path takes an unexpected turn when a sudden jeepney breakdown leaves him stranded alongside his longtime musical hero (Brylle Parzuelo).
Director Garnet Morilla Llames, who also performs in indie-pop duo Justin + Garnet, shared that bringing the film to local communities reflects the heart behind its production. Llames dedicated the project to every Pinoy who continues to push forward despite life’s obstacles.
“We in Kuwerdas gave birth to ‘Kahel,’ and as its director, I really hope it goes far beyond what it is now,” Llames said. “Like birthing a child, we’ve carried, nurtured, and poured our hearts into it. Now, as filmmakers, we can only set it free and hope it reaches fellow dreamers.”
The production team behind the film includes producer and production manager Joharra Embalzado, line producer Rafael Beltran, cinematographer and editor Regine Mae Manuel, musical director and screenwriter Justin Niccolo Mariano, co-writer and script continuity supervisor Sai Salazar, second assistant director Rayanne Kabigting, production designer Irish Jundaye Macatangay, location manager and camera operator Ritch Matias, and sound recordist and boom operator Franz Juanillo.
Sweeping the student film circuit
The Pangasinan event follows a strong festival run. “Kahel” previously dominated Sinepiyu XVIII, FEU’s annual student film showcase, winning Best Film, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Music/Score in the All Tamaraws Division. The short film also earned the Gawad Bathala Best Film award at the Tamaraw Media Awards.
HIFF 2026 uses regional storytelling and youth empowerment to uplift emerging creators. Film lovers can experience “Kahel” during the festival’s full-day schedule on Sept. 5.
