Three months after it flew into theaters and then stumbled hard at the box office, the DC Universe’s Supergirl finally has a streaming date. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have confirmed that the Milly Alcock-led film lands on HBO Max on September 10, giving Filipino fans who caught its Philippine cinema run this summer a reason to revisit it, and those who missed it a second chance to watch.

When Supergirl starts streaming

Supergirl will be available to HBO Max subscribers beginning Thursday, September 10, with an ASL version arriving the same day. It also debuts on HBO’s linear channel the following evening, September 11 at 8 p.m. ET. Here is the release rundown:

Why it moved to streaming so fast

Supergirl is the second movie in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, following last year’s blockbuster Superman, and it had a much rougher ride. It opened with about $38 million domestically and wrapped its theatrical run with roughly $126 million worldwide, against a reported production budget of between $170 million and $185 million.

Critics were lukewarm as well, with the film holding around a 53 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to IGN’s summary. The quick trip to streaming is typical for a superhero release that underperformed in theaters.

What the film is about

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl follows Alcock’s Kara Zor-El as she hunts Krem of the Yellow Hill, the villain who poisoned her dog Krypto. The True Grit-inspired road trip across the galaxy pairs Kara with a young girl named Ruthey, who wants revenge after learning Krem killed her father, per Polygon’s recap.

Where Kara goes next

Despite the muted response, Alcock is confirmed to reprise the role in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. She joins a DC slate that Warner Bros. is steadily rolling out, from the R-rated animated Batman: Knightfall to live-action features, as the studio bets on both theaters and streaming.
