Alpas Pinas advocates nuclear energy for cheaper, cleaner Philippine power

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines faces an energy challenge that could impact its future growth prospects despite positive economic forecasts from the World Bank, which predicts a 6% growth rate from 2024 to 2026. High energy costs, geopolitical tensions, and weather disruptions are pressing concerns that require a transformative solution.

With electricity rates reaching PHP11 per kWh—the second highest in Southeast Asia—and 61.9% of the country’s power dependent on coal, most of which is imported, finding a reliable and cost-effective energy source is critical.

Nuclear energy is emerging as a viable alternative. Alpas Pinas, a non-profit organization advocating clean energy, along with Pangasinan 2nd District Representative Cong. Mark Cojuangco, highlighted the economic and environmental advantages of nuclear power during a media briefing.

“Nuclear energy stands out as a cost-competitive option when considering system costs and externalities. Its low-carbon, reliable supply offers a pathway to affordable and sustainable energy,” said Cojuangco.

Alpas Pinas’ Lead Convenor Gayle Certeza emphasized that while renewable energy requires costly infrastructure upgrades and backup systems, nuclear energy offers a one-time investment with infinite energy potential.

Beyond energy security, nuclear power can spark economic growth by creating job opportunities in sectors like plant operations, healthcare, and services. “The ripple effect of nuclear adoption can transform industries and uplift communities,” Cojuangco added.

Globally, countries like Germany are reconsidering nuclear energy amid energy crises. Tech giants such as Microsoft are also investing in nuclear power to sustain their AI-driven operations.

On the legislative front, the proposed Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, sponsored by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, aims to establish PhilATOM, an independent authority for nuclear safety and security.

Alpas Pinas and Cojuangco urge swift policymaker action to harness nuclear energy for economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.
