PASIG, Philippines (July 2026) — Transforming ordinary citizens into a massive force for disaster response and nation-building has earned Angat Pinas, Inc., popularly known as Angat Buhay, the prestigious Freedom Flame Award for 2026. The recognition highlights how everyday people can protect democracy through active community participation.

Presented by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Philippines during its annual ceremony at the Decagon Events Place in Pasig City, the award celebrates advocates who keep civil liberties thriving across the nation. This year, the foundation marked 40 years of its presence in the country and 15 years of its awards program under the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas: 40 Years of Freedom in Action.”

Empowering the country’s biggest volunteer network

Center for Liberalism and Democracy Chair Gerry Bulatao presented the award to Angat Buhay Executive Director Raffy Magno. The non-profit organization was founded by former Vice President of the Philippines Leni Robredo, who now serves as the Naga City Mayor and Chairperson Emeritus. The group aims to empower Pinoys to form active communities by mobilizing the country’s largest volunteer network for its Bayanihan programs.

According to the foundation’s citation, Angat Buhay has inspired countless Pinoys to step forward, serve others and become active partners in building a more inclusive nation by transforming compassion into meaningful action. The foundation added that democracy thrives through the everyday acts of citizens who choose to care and participate.

Magno accepted the recognition on behalf of the volunteers, partner organizations and local communities driving the movement. He noted that the award validates their core mission of opening wider avenues for people to participate directly in democratic life.

Honoring champions of civil liberties

The Freedom Flame Awards also recognized several other organizations for their dedication to public service and human rights. The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines was honored for defending civil liberties, upholding the rule of law and protecting human dignity. The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats was recognized for fostering regional solidarity, human rights and democratic principles across Asian borders.

Local governance also took center stage, with the Local Government Unit of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, receiving praise for creating a benchmark in participatory governance and inclusive leadership. Additionally, the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership was recognized for empowering young leaders to practice values-driven public service and integrity.

Keynote speaker and former Representative Lorenzo “Erin” Tanada III reminded attendees that freedom must be continually tended and shared, noting that when one candle lights another, the light expands because it has been shared.

The evening featured performances by the Bagong Himig Serenata of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the PUP Maharlika Dance Artists, with Miss Philippines Earth 2025 Joy Barcoma hosting the event.
