Astro Burn: Chaotic space cat shooter just hit Steam, and it’s as wild as it sounds

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (April 2026) — A neon-colored space cat blasting through waves of cute enemies sounds ridiculous, but that is exactly why Astro Burn is getting attention as it launches into Early Access on Steam.

The retro-inspired shoot-’em-up leans into chaos and charm, mixing classic arcade gameplay with a loud, internet-era aesthetic that feels more meme than nostalgia. It is now playable on PC and Mac, giving curious players a chance to jump in early and help shape the final version.

A space cat, lasers, and pure chaos

At the center of the game is Astro, a heavily armed orange cat navigating bizarre worlds in search of a way home. Players fight through 10 levels that range from outer space to underwater environments and sprawling cities, all packed with enemies that are equal parts cute and overwhelming.

Combat is fast and frantic. The screen fills quickly, and survival depends on stacking power-ups and reacting just as fast. The game also supports solo play and local couch co-op, making it easy to pick up whether you are playing alone or with friends.

Not just for hardcore players

Shoot-’em-ups, or shmups, are known for punishing difficulty, but the team behind Astro Burn is trying to lower that barrier. Early reactions from players at the London Games Festival suggest that even those who usually avoid the genre found it approachable.

Game director HaZ Dulull said some of the most memorable feedback came from hesitant players who initially thought they would struggle, only to realize the game was more accessible than expected.

That balance between challenge and approachability appears to be a key reason behind the surge in Steam wishlists following its festival showcase.

Built with the community in mind

Launching in Early Access means the game is far from finished. The developers are actively inviting players to provide feedback that will help refine gameplay, balance mechanics, and shape future updates.

Publisher Pixel Doors said the early momentum shows the game has a broad appeal, combining the addictive nature of classic arcade shooters with a more welcoming design.

Astro Burn is now available in Early Access on Steam for PC and Mac.

Note: Pricing details and a full release timeline have not been disclosed as of writing.
