Ateneo beat 3 UP Team in finals

Team Ateneo, the lone team from the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) defeated a field of three teams from the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP-D) at the recently concluded Go Green In The City 2016 Philippine Country Finals.

Under the team name Ateneo Ohm, Prince Aldrin Domer and Sheena Fernandez, both Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) students from ADMU presented a proposal for a device called AeoLuminate, a versatile energy harvesting device that takes power from solar, wind, and vibration sources. The device may also be used to monitor air-quality, and filter the air.

The entire system powers itself and is ideal for off-grid streetlighting. The proposed setup was to install a device each atop streetlamps where it can power the light, collect air-quality data, and improve air-quality with a three-stage filtration system.

[Aeoluminate] envisions a step forward in addressing the challenges posed by unpredictable weather conditions to existing standalone renewable technologies, as well as the increasing need for better data on air quality for monitoring and policy-making purposes in the face of increasing greenhouse gas emissions,

said Domer. He further explained how the entire system powers itself and is ideal for off-grid streetlighting. The proposed setup was to install a device each atop streetlamps where it can power the light, collect air-quality data, and improve air-quality with a three-stage filtration system.

Domer and Fernandez also highlighted on how the system is ‘very scalable’ and can be customized to address any off-grid energy needs.

Ateneo Ohm took home a grand prize of PhP 100,000 and the opportunity to represent the Philippines in the next phase of Go Green in the City 2016 East Asia Regional Semi-Finals on June 10, 2016.

Schneider Support to Ateneo

Schneider Electric Philippines will support Ateneo Ohm in their preparation for the next phase of the competition. “[Schneider Electric Philippines] will help to further develop their business case, and to further sharpen their presentation skills,” said Schneider Electric Philippines Country HR Director Tess Portillo. “We hope, like our previous representatives in the past editions of Go Green In The City, Ateneo Ohm will be able to make it to France,” she continued.

If the Domer and Fernandez are successful in the Regional Semi-Finals, they will represent the Region in the Grand Final in Paris, France.

Two Philippine teams have made it to France in previous editions of Go Green, the most recent ones being John Paul Santos and Christian Sta  Romana of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines who got second runner up in the 2015 Grand Final for their Electrifilter device. The device generates electricity from dirty water as it gets filtered and cleansed. In 2013, Lorenzo Payonga and Alyssa Vintola  took home the Grand Prize with the Oscillohump, a device that collects energy from vehicles going through speedbumps.

All the previous winners, save for Sta  Romana who is set to graduate next year, are currently employed by Schneider Electric Philippines.
