BPI champions employee well-being with Cancer Care Leave Program

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is going beyond standard benefits by introducing its pioneering Cancer Care Leave Program, making it one of the first banks in the country to provide dedicated support for employees facing cancer.

More than a workplace policy, the program reflects BPI’s deep commitment to caring for its people—acknowledging the emotional, physical, and financial challenges that come with cancer, and ensuring that employees and their families feel supported every step of the way.

The Cancer Care Leave is a 15-day non-cash, non-cumulative paid leave granted to BPI employees who are diagnosed with cancer. It can be taken consecutively or on a staggered basis within the year of entitlement.

“At BPI, we stand with our employees during life’s most challenging moments. We want to offer them the time, care, and understanding they need to focus on their healing and recovery. We want every employee to feel valued and supported, knowing that they are never alone in this journey. The well-being of our people is always a priority,” said Gina Eala, BPI’s Chief Human Resources Officer.

The benefit is available to employees who have already exhausted sick leave credits and can submit a medical certificate from a licensed oncologist confirming the diagnosis and required medical intervention. The application resets every year and only needs approval from the immediate supervisor and endorsement from Human Resources.

The initiative builds on the Bank’s broader healthcare support, including medical insurance and dread disease coverage that can be used for cancer treatment, as well as access to MindYou, a digital mental health platform for emotional and psychological support.

The program further supports BPI’s participation in the Working with Cancer Pledge, a global cross-industry movement. In the Philippines, the initiative is supported by Publicis Groupe PH, AC Health with Healthway Cancer Care Hospital, and the People Management Association of the Philippines. The movement seeks to create inclusive workplaces for cancer patients and fight the stigma associated with the disease.

Through initiatives like the Cancer Care Leave Program, BPI continues to demonstrate its commitment to going beyond mandated benefits and cultivating a compassionate workplace where employees are cared for like family.
