PASIG CITY, Philippines (Sept. 2026) – Defending democratic rights across Asia requires continuous effort across borders, and a regional alliance has just been recognized for leading that fight.
Former Cabinet Secretary Butch Abad accepted the 2026 Freedom Flame Award on behalf of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) during a ceremony held at Decagon Events in Pasig City. Concepcion “Chit” Asis, Lead Convenor of the People Power Volunteers for Reform in the Caraga Region, presented the recognition.
The award was conferred by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Philippines as the organization celebrated 40 years of operation in the country and 15 years of its Freedom Flame program. Held under the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas: 40 Years of Freedom in Action,” the event honored leaders and groups expanding democratic spaces for Pinoy communities and neighboring countries.
Standing up for shared freedoms
FNF praised CALD for building strong alliances that promote rule of law, human rights, and democratic frameworks across Asia. By bringing together political parties, civic advocates, and reformists, the coalition has built a platform for political dialogue and mutual support.
Organizers highlighted that protecting democratic principles in one country directly strengthens neighboring nations, making political resilience a shared responsibility across international boundaries.
Local champions share the spotlight
The 2026 Freedom Flame Awards also honored several key organizations working across the Philippines. Key domestic awardees included the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines, Angat Buhay, the Local Government Unit of Del Carmen in Surigao del Norte, and the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership.
Speakers throughout the evening stressed that safeguarding fundamental rights requires everyday effort. Former Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III noted that sharing democratic values multiplies their strength across communities. Meanwhile, Mathias Kruse, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, emphasized how international cooperation helps keep governance transparent.
FNF Philippines Country Director Dr. Almut Besold confirmed that the foundation will continue supporting local institutions, encouraging youth participation, and deepening regional coalitions like CALD in the years ahead.
