Can Southeast Asia become carbon negative by 2025? New report bares possibilities

Have you ever wondered how data can transform sustainability efforts? For Epson, a global leader in technology, the answer is clear: data is the key to meaningful change. Through its Environmental Vision 2050, Epson has committed to becoming carbon-negative and underground-resource free. The company’s Southeast Asia Sustainability Report for FY2023 showcases how a data-driven approach accelerates their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

Moving beyond activities to data-driven action

In FY2023, Epson established a Sustainability Task Force across Southeast Asia, driven by a materiality assessment of key issues. Stakeholders—including customers, suppliers, distributors, NGOs, and service providers—helped shape the priorities. The result? A roadmap targeting sustainability in three areas:

  1. Circular economy practices
  2. Industry innovation
  3. Social responsibility alignment with UN SDGs

Accelerating impact through renewable energy and waste reduction

Epson’s global operations achieved a remarkable milestone in FY2023 by transitioning to 100% renewable electricity. In Southeast Asia, emissions from electricity use (Scope 2) were reduced by 37% through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Meanwhile, the company is tackling its largest emission source, Scope 3, through retrofitting facilities for BCA Green Mark certification in five countries, including the Philippines.

The sustainability roadmap also includes reducing waste. All Southeast Asia offices phased out plastic bottles, with plans to eliminate single-use plastics by 2025. Programs like the Corporate Waste Collection Program in the Philippines converted 200 kilograms of recyclables into school chairs and furniture, expanding soon to other cities.

Innovation and collaboration for a sustainable future

Epson goes beyond internal changes by screening suppliers for environmental practices. In FY2023, 35% of new suppliers in Southeast Asia were evaluated for sustainability. “Together with our employees and business partners, we are making meaningful strides toward a sustainable future,” said Siew Jin Kiat, Regional Managing Director of Epson SEA.
