PHILIPPINES – When was the last time you were truly inspired? For young Filipino gymnasts, that moment came at a two-day camp led by none other than Carlos Yulo, one of the country’s most celebrated athletes. Organized by Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) under their global Start Your Impossible program, the event was more than just training—it was a chance for young talents to dream big and work towards greatness.
A camp of champions
Held on November 15-16, 2024, at the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) MVPSF Gym, the event brought together 30 gymnasts aged 7 to 16 from Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu. The camp’s agenda included stretching, warm-ups, three intensive training sessions, and a nutrition lecture from Jeanette Aro, a sports nutritionist.
Yulo, alongside his coaching team led by Aldrin Castañeda, worked closely with the participants, offering hands-on guidance on techniques and discipline. Through motivational talks, he encouraged the young athletes to embrace challenges and strive for excellence—not just in sports, but in life.
Inspiring future champions
Carlos Yulo’s role goes beyond being an athlete. As part of Toyota’s Start Your Impossible campaign, he aims to inspire and empower others. He called himself a “Dual Hero,” shouldering the responsibility of both excelling in competitions and nurturing future champions.
“To our young gymnasts, remember this experience always. You learned from the Philippines’ best gymnast!” TMP President Masando Hashimoto told the participants.
Camp attendees, such as Caila, Ysa, and Eauline, described the experience as transformative. “We dream of competing internationally, just like Carlos,” one participant shared.
Creating a legacy
Through initiatives like this camp, Yulo and Toyota Motor Philippines are paving the way for a new generation of Filipino athletes. The program demonstrates how the power of mentorship, combined with corporate advocacy, can help achieve big dreams—one flip, stretch, and beam at a time.
