MANILA, Philippines – The stakes are high for the upcoming fight of Filipino World Boxing Champion Donnie Nietes against Mexican fighter Carlos Velarde as he will try to defend his crown to become the longest reigning Filipino World Champion.
ABS-CBN tied up with ALA Promotions for Pinoy Pride 28 in Cebu this coming November 15 (Saturday) to showcase a thrilling match between two great fighters.
To own the coveted title of longest reigning Filipino World Champion, Nietes must win against Velarde to break the record established by the Great Flash Elorde.
According to experts, Nietes has great potential to beat the younger Velarde. Nietes, who was described by Coach Freddie Roach as the best Pinoy boxer next to Pacquiao, has accumulated plenty of accomplishments in his boxing career, with a recent knockout win over Moises Fuentes last May. If he remains undefeated, 2014 could be Nietes’ best year.
The World Boxing Champ’s life turned around when he had the guts to approach ALA and asked if he could do boxing in the ALA Gym where he was employed as a janitor. Since then, Nietes’ name was printed beside the names of other respected fighters in boxing history books. Nietes currently holds a 33-4-1 win-draw-loss,19KOs record.
