EastWest Rural Bank plants mangroves in Davao for a sustainable future

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — EastWest Rural Bank (EWRB) marked its 11th anniversary by rolling up its sleeves for a greener future. On November 29, 2024, employees teamed up with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) for a meaningful mangrove tree-planting activity at Sitio Malamboon, Barangay 76-A Bucana.

The volunteer group planted 100 mangrove seedlings, reinforcing coastal health and biodiversity while raising awareness about the importance of mangroves. These coastal trees not only protect shorelines from erosion but also serve as natural barriers against storms and rising sea levels.

“This initiative strengthens our connection with the community and reflects our dedication to sustainability and environmental care,” said Cristy G. Hurtado, People Support Lead at EWRB.

Environmental expert Engr. Jasper Castor emphasized the ecological value of mangroves, applauding the bank’s efforts. “Mangroves support marine life and promote ecological balance. Efforts like these inspire community action to protect natural resources for future generations.”

This first-ever tree-planting event underscores EWRB’s commitment to local environmental efforts. The bank hopes to inspire collective responsibility in protecting natural ecosystems, showing that small steps can lead to significant impacts.
