MANILA, Philippines (Mar. 2026) — True toughness in sports isn’t about noise or bravado. For three Filipina athletes competing under Smart Sports, it’s about preparation, discipline, and staying composed under pressure.
Professional golfer Sam Bruce, badminton standout Mika De Guzman, and Adamson volleyball star Shaina Nitura operate in different arenas, but their approach to competition shares a common thread: resilience built through discipline and focus.
Consistency is key in badminton
Mika De Guzman, a 32nd SEA Games bronze medalist, Top 168 international player, and three-time UAAP MVP, emphasizes steadiness. “People don’t see how physically and mentally demanding badminton is,” she says. Her strength lies in consistency. “When momentum shifts, I focus on one point at a time.” That composure allows her to maintain performance until the final point.
Patience shapes golf performance
For Sam Bruce, a competitor on the Epson Tour in the U.S. and Ladies European Tour, toughness comes from restraint as much as power. “If something doesn’t go my way, it’s okay. I focus on moving forward,” she says. Balancing a Computer Science degree at Seattle University with a professional golf career taught her efficiency and focus. Her routine, repeated over every shot, sustains her through long, demanding tournaments.
Volleyball demands real-time resilience
Shaina Nitura, UAAP Season 87 Rookie of the Year and Adamson Outside Hitter, learned to respond instantly. “The hardest opponent is yourself. How do I respond to tough situations?” she says. Prayer and resetting her mindset allow her to keep performing under pressure. Her approach helped her set the UAAP all-time single-season scoring record and the highest single-game score in league history.
Support systems matter
All three athletes benefit from structured backing through Smart Sports and Puso Pilipinas. Beyond winning medals, the support helps them train, gain international exposure, and grow as professionals. Jude Turcuato, FVP at Smart Communications and Head of Smart Sports, notes, “It’s about building an environment where Filipina athletes can compete and grow with confidence.”
Passing on lessons
The athletes also share their insights for the next generation. Mika stresses quiet strength and daily discipline. Sam encourages ambition and dreaming big. Shaina emphasizes persistence: “The easiest thing to do is give up. Instead, just keep trying.”
This Women’s Month, their stories highlight a clear message: toughness is developed over time, tested under pressure, and carried forward by Filipinas who compete, endure, and lead by example.
