Chinese rocket debris falls near PH waters – Philippine Space Agency

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Mar 2026) — A Chinese rocket launched early Friday morning sent debris falling toward two areas near Philippine territory, and the government wants the public to know what to watch for.

The Philippine Space Agency confirmed that China’s Long March 8A rocket lifted off from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center in Wenchang at around 3:49 AM Philippine Standard Time on March 13, 2026. Debris from the launch was projected to fall within two identified drop zones near Philippine waters.

The first drop zone sits approximately 162 nautical miles from El Nido, Palawan, 185 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa, and 101 nautical miles from Patag Island. This area falls within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone. The second drop zone is located 32 nautical miles from Hadji Muhtamad, Basilan, 44 nautical miles from Pangutaran Island in Sulu, and 47 nautical miles from the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park. This second zone falls within Philippine archipelagic waters.

PhilSA said it distributed a pre-launch report to relevant government agencies before the rocket lifted off. Details of the drop zones were also disclosed through a Notice to Airmen warning of an aerospace flight activity.

What the debris means for people in the area

Rocket debris, which typically includes discarded boosters and fairings, is not projected to land on inhabited areas. However, PhilSA warns that falling materials still pose a risk to ships, fishing boats, aircraft, and other vessels passing through the affected zones. There is also a possibility that debris could float and eventually wash ashore near coastal communities.

PhilSA also noted that an uncontrolled re-entry of the rocket’s upper stages returning from outer space cannot be ruled out at this time.

Anyone who spots suspected debris is advised to report it to local authorities immediately. PhilSA strongly cautions against picking up or getting close to any materials, as they may contain remnants of toxic substances including rocket fuel.
