NEGROS, Philippines – Mount Kanlaon erupted on December 9, sending a towering ash column up to 3,000 meters into the sky. The second eruption this year, the active volcano released 4,638 tons of sulfur dioxide beforehand, alerting communities in the region.
As one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines, Mount Kanlaon’s activity is a stark reminder of the country’s location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The Department of Health (DOH) continues to emphasize the health risks posed by volcanic ashfall, especially after recent eruptions like Taal’s 2020 event, which blanketed Metro Manila and surrounding regions in ash.
Barangay BK, a health advocacy platform, highlighted these dangers in its latest public awareness campaign. Featuring pulmonary specialist Dr. Johnson See, the campaign focused on ashfall’s impact on health. According to Dr. See, inhaling volcanic ash can lead to nasal irritation, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with asthma. Prolonged exposure could escalate to serious conditions such as bronchitis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
The health risks don’t stop at the respiratory system. The DOH warns that ash can irritate the eyes, causing redness, conjunctivitis, and even corneal abrasions. Skin issues like rashes and secondary infections can also arise due to prolonged exposure.
Dr. See advises the public to stay indoors, seal windows and doors, and use damp towels to block ash from entering homes. Air conditioning and air purifiers should be set to recirculate air. If outdoor trips are unavoidable, protective measures like wearing masks, goggles, or wet handkerchiefs are essential. Staying hydrated, keeping medications ready, and preparing emergency kits are equally critical steps for safety.
“Don’t ignore symptoms like difficulty breathing,” Dr. See emphasized. “Seek medical help immediately if needed.”
