Nuclear energy seen as shield against typhoon destruction in the Philippines

MAKATI CITY, Philippines – Nuclear energy is gaining traction as a key solution to the Philippines’ vulnerability to typhoon damage and its ongoing energy crisis. Alpas Pinas, a non-profit advocating clean and reliable energy, renewed its push for nuclear power after a series of six destructive typhoons battered the nation in just over a month.

Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, Super Typhoon Leon, and Tropical Storms Marce, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito caused extensive flooding, displaced thousands, and affected millions. The disasters highlighted the urgent need for stable, disaster-resilient energy solutions.

“Nuclear energy is not just a clean energy source; it is the key to securing a stable and affordable energy future for the Philippines,” said Gayle Certeza, Lead Convenor of Alpas Pinas. “Shifting to nuclear power is essential to reduce the dire effects of climate change and ensure a consistent energy supply amidst the increasing severity of extreme weather events.”

Alpas Pinas pointed out that about 80% of the country’s carbon emissions stem from coal-based electricity generation. Replacing fossil fuels with nuclear power could reduce these emissions and ensure the grid remains operational during typhoon season.

Pangasinan Representative Mark Cojuangco, a long-time nuclear energy advocate, emphasized its economic and environmental benefits.

“Now is the time for the government to recognize the vast benefits of nuclear energy, not just for environmental reasons but for the economic growth it could bring. We need to ensure that our energy infrastructure is prepared to handle the growing demands of a changing climate,” Cojuangco said.

Cojuangco added: “You cannot be an environmentalist without being an advocate for nuclear energy.”

Both Certeza and Cojuangco stressed that nuclear power is not just an energy source but a strategy for resilience. With climate change increasing the intensity of typhoons, they called on policymakers to prioritize nuclear energy to strengthen the Philippines’ infrastructure and energy security.

“By advancing nuclear energy, we are paving the way for a future where businesses thrive, electricity costs are reduced, and the nation’s energy security is assured. It’s time for the Philippines to take bold steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future,” Certeza concluded.
