OPPO and Volkswagen ink 5G cellular patent deal as cars become mobile devices

DÜSSELDORF, Germany (Jun 2025) – Chinese smartphone maker OPPO has struck its first automotive patent deal, licensing critical 5G technology to German carmaker Volkswagen Group to power connected vehicles worldwide.

The global licensing agreement gives Volkswagen access to OPPO’s cellular standard-essential patents, including 5G technology that enables cars to communicate with networks, other vehicles, and infrastructure. The deal marks OPPO’s expansion beyond smartphones into the rapidly growing connected car market.

“This partnership is further recognition of OPPO’s leadership in cellular technology innovation,” said Vincent Lin, Head of Patent Licensing at OPPO, according to a press release obtained by our editors. The collaboration aims to enhance user experiences across Volkswagen’s global vehicle lineup.

For Volkswagen, the deal represents a strategic move to secure essential wireless technology as cars become increasingly connected. Modern vehicles rely on cellular networks for everything from navigation updates to over-the-air software patches and emergency services.

“The partnership with OPPO is an example of efficient, respectful, business focused collaboration in the space of licensing of Standard Essential Patents,” said Robin Cefai, Chief IP Licensing Officer at Volkswagen.

The agreement highlights how smartphone technology increasingly powers automotive innovation. OPPO’s 5G standard-essential patents are distributed across more than 40 countries and regions globally.

According to patent analytics platform LexisNexis IPlytics, OPPO ranked eighth globally in overall 5G patent strength as of January 2025. The company has filed over 113,000 patent applications and holds more than 62,000 granted patents worldwide as of March 2025.

OPPO continues investing heavily in core technologies including 5G/6G, artificial intelligence, charging, imaging, and video capabilities. The company maintains significant research operations globally, reinforcing its position as a leader in high-value intellectual property.

The licensing deal comes as automakers worldwide race to integrate advanced connectivity features into vehicles. Connected car technology enables features like real-time traffic updates, remote vehicle monitoring, and autonomous driving capabilities.

For technology companies like OPPO, automotive partnerships represent lucrative new revenue streams as smartphone growth slows globally. Patent licensing deals provide steady income while expanding technology reach into new industries.
