MANILA, Philippines – Samsung is ready to show the world the creativity of Filipinos with its first-ever mobile filmmaking festival dubbed “Untold Stories at Night”. The short films are set to premiere on June 17, 2022 at the Globe Auditorium at the BGC Arts Center in Taguig City.
The festival showcases a successful marriage of talent and mobile innovation. All short films have been shot using the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra that breaks the rules of videography. Featuring Nightography, the latest flagship brings game-changing technology that captures more light, motion, and detail than ever before, redefining the quality of content that users can now capture in the dark.
Nightography is anchored on the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s pro-grade cameras. Its 108MP Wide-angle lens takes category-leading high-resolution content with a wider view of the scene. The 12MP Ultra-Wide camera further expands the view, seeing almost as much as the eyes can. These are joined by the 10MP Telephoto lenses with 3x Optical Zoom and 10x Optical Zoom for long-range photography. Even selfies are upgraded with the 40MP Front camera.
The Untold Stories at Night short films are helmed by some of the country’s most acclaimed directors, powered by the epic features of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Siargao: Day & Night
The residents of Siargao have already begun to recover from the devastation of Typhoon Odette. Siargao Rises shows how life, especially nightlife, is coming back to the beautiful island.
The film is directed by Pepe Diokno, who produced Engkwentro, his first-ever feature film, while he was still a student at the University of the Philippines. It won the Lion of the Future – “Luigi de Laurentiis” Award and the Orizzonti Prize at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, among other local and international recognitions. His succeeding films Above the Clouds and Kapatiran have also received international acclaim.
Sinag
Sinag follows the journey of Rafael, who dreams of performing in the only bar in their town in a far-flung province. He embarks on a trip that would change his life.
The film is helmed by Noel Escondo, an award-winning actor, director, and producer; and Tristan Cua, founder of Mobile Filmmaking Philippines. Escondo’s short films Alaala, Baon, Last Night, and Lorna were screened and honored in local and international film festivals. His film Nakaw won Best Short Film at the Gawad Urian and the Minikino International Film Festival. Cua, a pioneer mobile filmmaker in the country, is also the cinematographer of Nakaw.
it was a love story (after all)
Cora, a widow in her 60s, wakes up in the middle of the night and finds her bedroom filled with vines and flowers. She looks down to find that she is wearing a beautiful dress, something similar to the one she wore to prom many years ago.
The film is directed by Samantha Lee, a director who advocates for better representation of women and the LGBTQ+ community in local media. Her first feature film, Baka Bukas, won the Emerging Talent Award at Outfest 2017 and the Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Lee’s follow-up, Billie and Emma, has been screened in over thirty film festivals internationally and won a slew of trophies including the Audience Award for Best Narrative at Inside Out 2019. Her first series starring Lovi Poe and Janine Gutierrez is set to premiere internationally this July.
Lumina
When a young girl named Lumina is pursued by mysterious men, she tries to book a ride to escape to another galaxy.
Lumina is directed by Mikhail Red, who at 21, wrote and directed his first feature film Rekorder. The film had its international premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Rekorder won several international awards including the Best Director prize at the 2014 Vancouver International Film Festival. This was followed by Birdshot, which was later selected as the Philippine entry to the Academy Awards. Red has also found success with Netflix.
