Shingles: A hidden risk for millions of Pinoys

Many Filipinos view chickenpox as a minor childhood illness, a distant memory after the itchy blisters fade. But the same virus that causes chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), doesn’t disappear. Instead, it lies dormant for years, ready to reawaken as shingles, a painful and potentially disabling condition.

Known locally as “kulebra,” shingles occurs when the dormant virus resurfaces, often due to a weakened immune system. Dr. Cheridine Oro-Josef, a Family Medicine and Geriatrics expert, describes the pain as comparable to “a dormant volcano coming to life.” The nerve pain, known as postherpetic neuralgia, can linger for months or years after the rash heals.

Shingles predominantly affects Filipinos aged 50 and above or those with conditions like asthma, heart disease, or chronic stress. About 24% of adults in the 50-59 age group—around 2 million Pinoys—are at risk. Early signs like tingling, itching, or burning on one side of the body can be subtle. These symptoms often precede the appearance of a painful rash with fluid-filled blisters that eventually crust over.

The virus can spread through direct contact with the fluid from these blisters or airborne particles if they burst. Dr. Oro-Josef stresses the importance of isolating to protect others, especially those who haven’t had chickenpox or been vaccinated.

Prevention is better than cure. Strengthening the immune system through a balanced diet, exercise, and stress management is essential. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk. Dr. Oro-Josef also advises against self-medicating with ointments or creams, as this can complicate diagnosis.

Treating shingles can be costly, highlighting the importance of prevention. With early awareness and action, Filipinos can reduce their risk of this debilitating illness. Consult your doctor about vaccination and treatment options for shingles today.
