Toyota Equips Mindoro’s Tamaraw Rangers for Critical Conservation Work

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Apr 10) – Protectors of the critically endangered Tamaraw in Mindoro received a significant boost this week, thanks to new equipment and a vehicle aimed at helping them navigate the challenging terrain where these unique animals live.

Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation (TMPF), the social responsibility arm of Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), handed over a brand new, locally produced Tamaraw Utility Van and specialized gear kits to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The turnover ceremony took place at the DENR Central Office in Diliman, Quezon City.

DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga accepted the donations alongside TMP President Masando Hashimoto and TMPF President Jose Maria Aligada. This aid is part of an ongoing collaboration formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding signed last December.

The long wheelbase Tamaraw van will enhance the mobility of the Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP) Office and assist the “Bantay Tamaraw Rangers” in their patrolling and monitoring duties across Mindoro.

Additionally, Php 500,000 worth of “Bantay Tamaraw Kits” were provided. These kits include essential mountaineering gear, equipment, and tools for the rangers.

The Bantay Tamaraw Rangers are volunteer Indigenous Peoples and local barangay residents. They dedicate their time to safeguarding the Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) and its habitat within Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park, which covers parts of Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro. Currently, 18 registered rangers are set to receive a complete set of this new equipment.

TMP President Masando Hashimoto expressed admiration for the rangers’ efforts. “We salute you for risking yourself on the ground to protect our Tamaraws,” he said. “Now, it is your turn to be protected too – from the harsh mountain conditions and various dangers of trekking and camping for weeks in the wilds.”

Hashimoto added that this initiative aligns with the global Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, specifically the goal of “Establishing a Society in Harmony with Nature.” TMP actively partners with DENR on environmental projects like reforestation and marine conservation.

This donation represents the first part of TMPF’s support. The foundation has also pledged a Php 3 million conservation fund. This fund will support habitat monitoring, research, programs for volunteer rangers, equipping the Tamaraw Research and Conservation Center, and public awareness campaigns. TMPF, established 35 years ago, focuses on health, education, environment, and community service.
