Toyota partners with DENR to protect Tamaraw species

MAKATI, Philippines – In a landmark collaboration, Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation (TMPF) has joined hands with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to boost efforts in conserving the critically endangered Tamaraw species. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to strengthen the Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP), an initiative aimed at saving this iconic Philippine species and its habitat.

Under the partnership, TMPF will donate a brand-new Tamaraw vehicle and PHP 500,000 worth of “Bantay Tamaraw” kits, including ranger equipment and supplies. These tools will enhance the capacity of Bantay Tamaraw rangers to patrol and protect known Tamaraw sites.

Moreover, TMPF is pledging a PHP 3-million conservation fund to support key initiatives. These include:

  • Monitoring and researching Tamaraw habitats.
  • Strengthening support programs for barangay and Indigenous Peoples (IP) volunteers.
  • Upgrading the Tamaraw Research and Conservation Center.
  • Promoting awareness through Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns, including events for the national Tamaraw Month.

The signing ceremony, held during the Next Generation Tamaraw grand public launch in Makati City, was graced by DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, TMP President Masando Hashimoto, and TMPF President Jose Maria Aligada.

The Tamaraw, scientifically known as Bubalus mindorensis, is a dwarf buffalo found only on Mindoro Island. Once abundant, its population has dwindled to just 500-600 individuals as of 2024, making it one of the world’s most critically endangered species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The TCP, established in 1979 via Executive Order No. 544, has been the government’s key initiative in safeguarding this species. By addressing threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and disease, the program hopes to reverse the Tamaraw’s population decline.
