MANILA, Philippines – Over the past few weeks there has been much discussion between government agencies over regulations and policies surrounding transport application Uber.

Just last October, the LTFRB apprehended an Uber driver in a sting operation, opening the debate on whether or not Uber should be considered part of the agency’s domain.

In response, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino defended Uber, comparing it to private transport services. In addition, the agency appreciates how the service helps address the lack of a good transportation system in Metro Manila.

Earlier today representatives from Uber had a dialogue with the Transportation Committee of the House of Representatives to discuss the situation.

Official statement from Uber follows.

Today, Uber Technologies had the privilege of addressing the Transportation Committee of the House of Representatives. We appreciated the opportunity to discuss the ways our platform can benefit the transportation industry in the Philippines and to answer questions from the honorable representatives present. Our technology – a platform that connects riders and drivers – offers superior standards of safety, reliability and accountability, gives consumers greater choice, and creates economic opportunity for drivers.

We look forward to continuing working with legislators and government agencies, including the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and other key agencies, to develop a framework which will allow us to continue providing our service and contributing to a superior transportation environment for the people of Metro Manila.
