UP professors win 2024 National Research Award for groundbreaking cancer and women’s health studies

MANILA, Philippines – The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) has awarded two University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) professors with the prestigious 2024 NSTW Outstanding Research and Development Award for Basic Research.

Dr. Pia Bagamasbad and Dr. Aurelio de los Reyes V, recognized for their groundbreaking research, will receive the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal during NSTW’s opening ceremony on November 27.

Recognizing Pioneering Contributions

Dr. Bagamasbad, a molecular biology expert at the UPD-CS National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, was lauded for her research linking stress and disrupted light-dark cycles to breast cancer risk through the KLF9 gene. Her study sheds light on molecular mechanisms, providing a foundation for potential solutions to public health challenges.

Dr. de los Reyes, a mathematics professor, earned recognition for his work on hormone-based contraceptive dosing strategies. His mathematical models aim to empower women by improving the safety and effectiveness of contraceptive use, giving them greater control over family planning.

Celebrating Science and Empowerment

NAST PHL commends Filipino scientists annually for their outstanding contributions to science and technology. Both awardees will also present their research to young scholars during ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth on November 28.

The achievements of Dr. Bagamasbad and Dr. de los Reyes reflect the global significance of basic research and its potential to address both current and future challenges.
