Can smart cities in the Philippines become a reality with help from the USA?

MANILA, Philippines – The U.S. Department of Commerce, with the support of the U.S. Embassy, recently organized a trade mission to the Philippines to highlight cutting-edge technologies that can transform the nation’s cities into sustainable and resilient urban hubs. Among the key participants was NGA 911 LLC, a pioneer in next-generation emergency response solutions, which has already begun implementing its systems in local government units (LGUs) across the country.

Tech solutions for urban growth

The trade mission featured 12 U.S.-based companies, each presenting state-of-the-art solutions for smart city and infrastructure development. Their technologies span across various sectors, including:

  • Emergency response: Advanced systems for nationwide 911 hotlines.
  • AI applications: Graph-based AI for data-driven urban planning.
  • Cybersecurity: Ensuring secure and private digital systems.
  • Transportation: Innovative rail and mobility solutions.
  • Construction and energy: Advanced engineering and sustainable energy technologies.

This initiative follows the successful Presidential Trade and Investment Mission in March, led by Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, which laid the groundwork for these collaborations.

NGA 911’s impact on emergency systems

Since entering the Philippines in 2018, NGA 911 has installed its next-generation command centers in Morong (Rizal), Alaminos (Pangasinan), and Cagayan de Oro City. These systems align with Executive Order 56, mandating a unified nationwide emergency hotline (911). Additional LGUs, such as Cebu City, are preparing to adopt this technology, ensuring faster and more effective responses during emergencies.

Building connections for a better future

The mission also focused on fostering partnerships between U.S. companies and Philippine stakeholders. Delegates visited both Manila and Clark City, engaging with local officials to explore governance practices and urban development strategies that could benefit both countries.

By leveraging these innovative solutions, the Philippines is taking significant steps toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable cities.
