Zyxel eliminates default passwords, boosts MFA in new security push

HSINCHU, Taiwan (July 10) – Zyxel Networks is reinforcing its commitment to cybersecurity by fully embracing the “Secure by Design” pledge, an initiative led by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). This move aims to make digital security a fundamental part of product development from the very beginning.

As one of the first Taiwanese companies and a pioneer in the global small and medium-sized business (SMB) networking sector to join the pledge, Zyxel is proactively enhancing the security of its products. According to a press release obtained by our editors, this initiative prioritizes user safety by embedding security features directly into the design and manufacturing process, rather than adding them as an afterthought.

The company has made significant strides across its product lines. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is now a standard feature for all its Nebula cloud-managed devices, including firewalls, switches, and access points. Zyxel also noted it was the first global vendor to offer MFA for wireless access through its Secure WiFi feature, adding a crucial layer of security for remote users.

To further tighten security, Zyxel has eliminated default passwords. New devices now ship with unique, random passwords that must be changed during initial setup. For its cloud-managed networks, users are required to create strong, unique credentials from the start.

Zyxel has also intensified its efforts to reduce vulnerabilities by adopting robust secure coding practices, adhering to the OWASP Top 10 guidelines, and using advanced analysis tools. The company also works with independent third-party firms for penetration testing to identify and fix potential security weaknesses before products reach the market.

Transparency and timely updates are key components of Zyxel’s strategy. As a CVE Numbering Authority (CNA) since 2021, the company has maintained an industry-standard response time for patching vulnerabilities. Zyxel has also established a public vulnerability disclosure policy (VDP), earning the highest level of CNA acceptance among SMB networking brands for its transparent reporting.

“We believe that security must be built in, not bolted on,” said Gary Chen, SEA regional head at Zyxel Networks. “Our commitment to Secure by Design helps us protect our customers and partners in a fast-evolving threat landscape. Our approach is grounded in openness, honesty and long-term trust.”
