GCash already lets you send money, pay bills, buy load, invest, and get insured all from one app. Now it wants to add another tile: crypto trading.
From GCrypto to full trading
GCash already dipped into digital assets with GCrypto, which launched in 2023 and lets users buy and sell cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum through the app. But reports indicate GCash is preparing a more active crypto trading feature that goes beyond simple buy-and-hold investing into a full trading experience where users can trade multiple coins, monitor price movements, and potentially set orders directly from the app.
The feature has been teased for months. Unbox reported that GCash told them to “watch out for it soon” as early as 2025, and the company recently re-ignited speculation by updating its app interface with trading-related cues. The 5th GCash iGnite Innovation Summit held in 2026, which focused on AI and cybersecurity, also featured conversations around expanding financial access through digital assets.
Why this matters for the Philippines
GCash has over 90 million registered users. Even a fraction adopting crypto trading would instantly make it one of the largest crypto on-ramps in Southeast Asia. The Philippines has one of the highest cryptocurrency adoption rates in the world, ranking high on Chainalysis’s global crypto adoption index year after year. Many Filipinos already use dedicated crypto exchanges like Coins.ph, PDAX, and Binance, but the convenience of trading inside the app they already use for daily payments could shift the market.
The BSP has been gradually formalizing its stance on digital assets. While the central bank does not recognize cryptocurrencies as legal tender, it has licensed several crypto exchanges under its Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) framework. GCash’s parent company, Mynt (backed by Globe Telecom, Ayala Corporation, and Mitsubishi), is well-positioned to secure or already operates under the necessary regulatory approvals.
What could the feature look like?
If GCash follows the template it set with GCrypto, the trading feature would be embedded directly in the GCash app’s dashboard alongside Send Money, Pay Bills, and Buy Load. Users could fund their trading wallet from their GCash balance, eliminating the bank transfer step that dedicated exchanges still require. This frictionless funding is GCash’s killer advantage no standalone crypto exchange can match.
The feature would likely mirror the simplicity of GCash’s existing investment products: a clean interface, curated coin selection, and real-time pricing. Security will be the central question, as integrating high-volatility trading products into a mass-market payments app carries risks the BSP and GCash will need to address.
The bigger picture
GCash’s push into crypto trading is part of a larger expansion beyond payments. The app now offers loans (GCredit, GLoan), insurance (GInsure), investment (GFunds, GStocks, GCrypto), and soon, active trading. Each new feature turns GCash from a simple e-wallet into a full financial super app, competing not just with Maya and other e-wallets, but with traditional banks and brokerages.
The crypto trading feature has not yet received an official launch date. But given the repeated teases and the rapid update pace of the GCash app in 2026, it could arrive before the year ends.
