Nottingham Forest have broken their transfer record to bring Liam Delap in from Chelsea, in a deal worth at least £45m that could rise to £50m with add-ons. After a forgettable season at Stamford Bridge, the 23-year-old is betting on a fresh start at the City Ground. Here is what the move means.

A club-record deal

Nottingham Forest have signed Liam Delap from Chelsea for a club-record fee worth around £50m, with the transfer understood to be worth at least £45m and potentially reaching £50m. The forward has signed a five-year deal at the City Ground and said: “I really can’t wait to get started. This is a massive club with a big history.”

Why Forest splashed out

Forest needed a proven natural striker. Chris Wood has enjoyed a resurgence in his 30s but struggled with injuries last season, and Taiwo Awoniyi was sold this summer. Manager Oliver Glasner has historically thrived with a focal point up front, and Delap arrives to compete with Wood and Igor Jesus for the starting spot.

Chelsea’s profitable exit

For Chelsea, the sale makes financial sense. The Blues signed Delap from Ipswich Town for £30m last summer, meaning they could make up to £20m profit on a striker who managed just two goals in 41 games at the club, a spell disrupted by shoulder and hamstring injuries. Chelsea have already added two strikers this summer in Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck.

Ipswich Town (2024-25) 12 in the top flight Ipswich’s Premier League season

Can Delap deliver?

Delap came up through Derby County’s youth system and was long seen as one of England’s brightest young forwards before the move to Chelsea stalled. At Forest, he joins a club that has been active in this window and is part of a summer of big-money Premier League moves. Whether he finally fulfils that potential is now the question at the City Ground.
