MMDA suspends number coding Monday, Aug. 31 for National Heroes Day

Metro Manila motorists get a break from the expanded number coding scheme on Monday, August 31, after the MMDA suspended vehicle coding for National Heroes Day, a regular holiday. If you were planning to drive anywhere across the capital that day, you can do so without worrying about your plate number being flagged.

Why coding is suspended

The suspension follows the automatic rule that coding is lifted during regular and special non-working holidays. August 31 was earlier declared a regular holiday by Malacañang to commemorate National Heroes Day, which always falls on the last Monday of August.

That means the expanded number coding scheme, which normally covers more vehicles and longer windows than the old system, is off for the entire day.

What it means for drivers

• No coding on Monday, Aug. 31: all private vehicles, regardless of plate-ending number, can use EDSA and other coding-covered roads all day.
• Applies to the expanded scheme: the wider window and broader plate coverage are both suspended for the holiday.
• Normal rules return Tuesday: the expanded scheme is back in force on September 1.
• Emergency assistance: motorists who need help may call the MMDA hotline at 136.

The MMDA still urged motorists to plan trips carefully, obey traffic laws and drive safely, even with coding suspended, since holiday road traffic in the capital can still build up around major thoroughfares and malls.
