Lionel Richie is in the intensive care unit in St. Louis, Missouri, after a weekend concert, and the health scare has fans watching his tour dates closely. The 77-year-old music legend reportedly checked himself into a hospital after struggling through his set at The Muny in Forest Park.

What happened

International media reported that Richie checked into a local hospital after his Saturday, Aug. 29 concert to undergo medical tests, and People confirmed he was in the ICU. According to witnesses cited by TMZ, the singer appeared to struggle toward the end of the show: during his 1983 hit “All Night Long,” he asked his team for a chair and finished the song seated.

Doctors evaluated Richie for possible mild dehydration, and the singer hopes to be discharged on Tuesday, according to reports. The incident comes months after another health scare on stage.

A difficult year on the road

In June, Richie was taken to a hospital after feeling “dizzy” in St. Paul, Minnesota, cutting that performance short. He was transported by ambulance after being met backstage by paramedics.

This latest hospitalization follows his return to the road for the “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. His next scheduled performance is Sept. 26 in San Francisco, though it is not confirmed whether this health issue will affect upcoming dates.

Richie and the Philippines

For Filipino fans, the news hits close to home. Richie first visited the Philippines with the Commodores in 1975, when the group played the Big Dome, and he returned to Manila as a solo act in April 2014 for the “All the Hits, All Night Long” world tour at the same venue. The country has long embraced his catalog, from “Easy” to “Endless Love” and “Say You, Say Me.”

A legacy Filipinos grew up on

Richie first rose to fame as lead singer and saxophonist of the Commodores, and built a solo career on hits like “Stuck on You” and “The Only One.” He is a four-time Grammy winner, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and co-wrote “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson in 1985. His 1983 album “Can’t Slow Down” won Album of the Year and sold more than 10 million copies.

His concerts here have drawn the same devoted crowds that keep classic acts touring the country, from Bread at the Araneta Coliseum to other legacy acts, and the same audience that turned out for Bruno Mars’ return to the Philippines. For now, fans are hoping for a speedy recovery and an update on the tour.
