TOKYO, Japan (Aug 2026) – City Pop fans who have had “Mayonaka no Door / Stay With Me” on repeat for years can finally dive deeper into the iconic Japanese singer’s archive. Seven ultra-rare Miki Matsubara tracks have officially made their worldwide digital debut across six single releases, making them accessible on major streaming services for the very first time.
A massive milestone for a 20th-century icon
The digital drop comes right after Matsubara’s 1979 hit “Mayonaka no Door / Stay With Me” crossed 500 million streams on Spotify. That achievement makes it only the 10th Japanese song in history to cross the half-billion mark, and the first song originally released in the 20th century to reach that milestone.
While that viral anthem introduced a new generation of Pinoy listeners to the smooth Japanese pop sound of the late 1970s and 1980s, these newly digitised tracks reveal an even broader range of her artistry. Previously, collectors could only find these B-sides and commercial tie-in songs on rare physical vinyl and CD pressings.
Rare gems and famous collaborations
Among the newly digitised highlights is “Paradise Beach (Sophie’s Theme),” a sought-after track composed by Haruomi Hosono, founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (Y.M.O.). The song originally gained fame as the soundtrack to a classic Maxell cassette commercial starring French actress Sophie Marceau.
Other additions include B-sides that fan communities have hunted down for decades. Her 1982 B-side track “WASH” already gathered over 20 million streams after its digital release, proving that deep cuts from her catalog carry massive global appeal.
