Moon Knight is trending again, and this time it is not just because the Avengers: Doomsday trailer reminded everyone how good Oscar Isaac’s 2022 Disney+ series was. Fans are asking a sharper question now: did Marvel Comics actually replace the hero? The short answer is yes. Marvel killed Marc Spector off in 2023, then handed his mantle to a dark pretender. Here is how it happened, and what it signals for Moon Knight’s long-awaited MCU comeback.
Why Moon Knight is trending this week
The spike follows the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which has Marvel fans back to mapping the Multiverse Saga’s loose ends. Moon Knight is one of them. Reports point to the character returning in the studio’s next story era, the Mutants era, where the supernatural corner of the universe is expected to take center stage alongside the X-Men.
Before any of that reaches screens, comic readers already know the messy road the hero traveled on the page: a death, an impostor, and a hard-won comeback.
Marvel really did kill him off
At the close of 2023, Marc Spector died in Moon Knight No. 30, sacrificing himself to stop a massive explosion set by the Black Spectre in the “Last Days of Moon Knight” storyline. His Midnight Mission carried on his work, protecting the vulnerable from supernatural threats the way the rage-fuelled Fist of Khonshu once did.
The dark pretender who took the mantle
The replacement was Maximillian Coleridge, AKA the Shroud, a former West Coast Avenger who wields the Darkforce. He claimed Khonshu’s gifts for himself, put on an inverted all-black Moon Knight suit, and ran his own violent version of the mission, steadily undoing what Marc had built. Marvel first set up the shake-up by revealing its new Moon Knight early in 2024.
How the original fought his way back
Marc did not stay down. During the Blood Hunt crossover, Khonshu resurrected his former champion, bringing Moon Knight back with a fresh set of powers. The inevitable showdown with the pretender landed in Vengeance of the Moon Knight No. 8, where Marc beat the Shroud and reclaimed the Fist of Khonshu for good. Marvel followed up by confirming a proper Moon Knight return in a follow-on series.
What it means for the MCU
Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector has been one of the most beloved one-off heroes in the MCU since the 2022 Disney+ series. A second season looks unlikely, but Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, teased in 2025 that the movie side has plans for him. After Avengers: Doomsday closes the Multiverse Saga on December 18, 2026, Moon Knight is expected to anchor the supernatural corner of the Mutants era, possibly alongside a Midnight Sons team-up down the line.
