Caitlin Clark did not need a 40-point explosion to make her international debut unforgettable. In her first FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup appearance, the most-watched player in women’s hoops instead ran a passing masterclass, coming off the bench to dish out a record 11 assists as the United States opened its title defense with a 94-61 rout of China.
A debut written in assists
Clark finished with 14 points on three three-pointers, but the number that rewrote history was her playmaking. Her 11 dimes are the most by a USA player in a Women’s World Cup debut, beating the nine Alyssa Thomas handed out against Belgium in 2022. In a single tournament game, no American has reached that total since Dawn Staley’s 12.
FIBA confirmed that stat line makes Clark the first ever to post 10-plus assists with zero turnovers in a Women’s World Cup game. Only seven other players have ever hit double-digit dimes in a single match since the statistic began being tracked in 1994, and none did it error-free.

The super-sub who set the tempo
Head coach Kara Lawson kept the Fever star out of the starting five, and the gamble paid off. Clark handed out four assists in her opening four minutes and finished the night as TCL Player of the Game with a 22 efficiency rating, logging more than 25 minutes as the spark USA’s second unit needed.
She was far from alone. Fellow debutant Paige Bueckers added 14 points of her own, and with nine of the 12 roster spots going to first-time World Cup players, the win doubled as a look at Team USA’s next decade. “It’s just organic. We know how to play well off of each other,” Bueckers told the Guardian.
China’s 7-foot-3 answer
The bright spot for the losing side was 7-ft-3 Zhang Ziyu, the 19-year-old who scored 13 points and hit nine of her 10 free throws in her own debut. She blocked two shots and made the Americans think twice about driving, but USA’s frontcourt of Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Aliyah Boston and Angel Reese combined for 24 rebounds to keep control of the paint.
The win stretched the Americans’ World Cup winning streak to 31 games. Team USA rests Saturday before facing Italy on Sunday and the Czech Republic on Monday in Berlin group play.
Why Filipino hoop fans are watching
Clark is already a crossover name in the Philippines, having become one of the first women to grace a NBA 2K27 cover alongside Victor Wembanyama and Derrick Rose. Her assist-first World Cup run lands as the local game builds its own momentum, with the men’s Gilas Pilipinas squad tuning up in Suwon to defend its Asian Games crown. For a basketball-mad nation, watching the sport’s biggest star orchestrate a record win is proof that women’s hoops has never commanded a bigger global stage.
