Today, Cavetown releases new single “Big Strong Man,” a deeply personal track exploring the confusing expectations of teenage masculinity, queer identity and the experience of being loved for a version of yourself that doesn’t feel true.
Written from a similar period in Robin Skinner’s life as beloved fan favorite “Boys Will Be Bugs,” “Big Strong Man” finds Cavetown looking back at adolescence and the pressure to fit into a version of masculinity that never felt like his own. With the vulnerability and emotional honesty that have become hallmarks of Cavetown’s music, the song puts words to the complicated feeling of being accepted by those around you while knowing that the person they see isn’t really you.
The story behind the song
Skinner shares: “Big Strong Man, based on a similar time in my life as Boys will be Bugs, is about my struggles with the confusing world of teenage masculinity as a young queer person, and how it sucks to feel loved for a version of yourself that isn’t true.”
The new single follows the release of Cavetown’s latest album, and arrives alongside a new music video. The North American “Running With Scissors Tour” kicks off on September 21 with support from Chloe Moriondo.
