DOST-SEI honors record-breaking number of young Filipino STEM champions


PHILIPPINES – The Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) has set a new milestone in the Philippine academic arena by honoring a record-breaking 2,114 young Filipino students in the 2023 Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards. This historic number marks a significant increase from the previous year, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in international science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) competitions.

Record-breaking achievement in STEM education

The 2023 YES Awards witnessed the highest number of awardees in its history, with a 17.31% increase compared to 2022. This feat highlights the exceptional talents of Filipino youth across various regions, notably the National Capital Region, CALABARZON, and Central Luzon, among others. These awards underscore the Philippines’ commitment to fostering academic excellence and international competitiveness in STEM fields.

Celebrating excellence at the Iloilo Convention Center

The ceremony, a part of the 2023 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTIW), was held for the first time outside Metro Manila, at the Iloilo Convention Center. This event not only celebrated the outstanding achievements of young Filipino talents but also brought together students, parents, members of the science community, and academic leaders to honor their dedication and hard work.

DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum emphasized the importance of using academic success for compassionate purposes and national development. DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette T. Biyo and DOST VI Regional Director Engr. Rowen Gelonga also expressed their admiration and hopes for these young minds to become future leaders in science and technology. Reysheil Anne B.
