MANILA, Philippines (Sep 2026) – A mother’s quiet devotion meets the devastation of war in a small island town where faith and grief collide. To mark its 93rd season, the FEU Theater Guild is staging MORYON, a Filipino adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s classic short story Mother Sauvage, set against the backdrop of Marinduque during the 1943 Japanese occupation.
Written and directed by Dudz Teraña, the play centers on Caridad, a mother waiting for her son Joaquin, a young guerrilla fighter trying to find his place in a war-torn country. Set during Holy Thursday in Mogpog, Marinduque, the narrative unfolds alongside the sacred Moriones tradition, exploring how ordinary people grapple with survival, justice, and loss when violence reaches their doorstep.
A mother’s choice amidst war
The production reimagines Maupassant’s moral dilemma through a distinctly Pinoy lens, asking what happens when personal suffering collides with deeply held spiritual traditions. Actresses Maria Alexandra Mayano and Maria Ysabel Delos Reyes alternate in the lead role of Caridad, bringing to life a mother forced to navigate the ultimate test of faith and love.
The performance also features a student-led creative and technical team handling everything from production design to dialect coaching in Marinduqueño and Japanese.
