Instagram now requires AI influencers to disclose they are AI, or lose reach

Instagram is rolling out an AI-generated profile label and demoting AI personas that refuse it, a shake-up for virtual influencers. #Instagram #AI #Meta #SocialMedia

That impossibly perfect face in your Instagram feed might not belong to a real person, and starting this week the platform wants you to know it. Instagram announced Monday that it is tightening how it labels AI-generated accounts and throttling the reach of profiles that feature AI-made people without coming clean.

What Instagram is changing

Instagram is renaming its disclosure label to “AI-generated profile”, a move meant to tell followers that the person fronting an account was generated or substantially created with artificial intelligence and is not a real human. Accounts that already carry the older “AI creator” mark will be moved over automatically.

Being upfront carries no penalty. Hiding it does: if Instagram’s systems detect an unlabeled AI profile, it can pull that account from recommendations and notify the owner through Account Status. Reach returns once the label is added, and wrongly flagged accounts can appeal.

Who must label, and who does not

Account type Does it need the label?
Profile whose featured person is AI-generated Yes, to keep full reach
Creator using AI to edit photos or captions No
Creator using AI for graphics or creative tweaks No
Account auto-flagged as an unlabeled AI persona Yes, or it gets demoted
  • New label name: AI-generated profile, replacing AI creator
  • Existing AI creator labels roll over automatically
  • Penalty for hiding an AI persona: reduced recommendation reach
  • Fix: add the label, or appeal if flagged wrongly

Why now: the virtual influencer boom

Instagram says the change is a direct response to people who have been fooled by human-looking AI profiles. Frustration has been building as AI influencers spread across platforms. TechCrunch, which covered the shift, points to a Wired investigation into a network of apparent AI personas promoting a dating app and a New York Times report on hundreds of AI-generated wellness accounts selling supplements as signs of how common the problem has grown.

What it means in the Philippines

The policy lands as Meta deepens its local footprint, including opening a Philippines office. AI trust is a live issue here too: Google’s own AI Overview has made high-profile mistakes, including falsely declaring a celebrity dead. For Pinoy creators experimenting with AI personas, the practical rule is simple: disclose it on the profile to keep your reach. For followers, treat hyper-polished accounts with a little more scrutiny, because some of those perfect faces were never born.
