Norway has lost its king. Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89, the royal palace announced. He leaves behind a monarchy he modernized over 35 years on the throne and a nation that called him the “people’s king.”

A peaceful passing

The palace in Oslo said Harald passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. at Oslo University Hospital, after being admitted last week for treatment of a rare blood condition. The royal flag over the palace was lowered to half-mast, and crowds had laid flowers at the gates in the 24 hours before his death.

Europe’s oldest monarch

Harald was Norway’s first king born in the country since the 14th century. He came to the throne in 1991 and reigned for more than three decades, making him Europe’s longest-serving and oldest living monarch. He has been succeeded by his son Haakon, 53, who will hold an extraordinary council of state with the government.

A reign that changed the monarchy

Milestone Detail
Birth February 21, 1937
Took the throne 1991
Years on the throne 35
Marriage Broke tradition by marrying commoner Sonja Haraldsen
Successor Son Crown Prince Haakon
Title Europe’s oldest reigning monarch

Harald was remembered as a popular, reforming figure who modernized the monarchy and broke with tradition by marrying a commoner. Royal observers described him as down-to-earth and beloved, a “grandfather” to the nation who served as a unifying presence in Norway’s most difficult moments.

A unifying voice in crisis

After the 2011 bomb and gun attacks on Oslo and the island of Utøya, Harald appealed to Norwegians to support one another and not let fear take over. His steady presence during that national tragedy was widely credited with helping the country heal.

Health struggles and a difficult succession

In recent years, Harald faced repeated health setbacks and recurring hospital stays. His later reign was also shadowed by scandal, including controversy over his daughter-in-law Mette-Marit’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein and her son Marius Borg Høiby. World leaders offered tributes, with King Charles III sending his “most heartfelt condolences”.

A life mourned across the world

Harald V’s death closes a remarkable chapter in European royal history, and the handover to King Haakon VIII begins. For Filipinos who follow world royalty, it is a reminder of a monarch who chose warmth and service over pomp. We recently remembered other beloved figures who left us this year, and Harald now joins the ranks of other icons we bid farewell to this year.
