KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Aug 2026) – A fresh musical movement is taking over the global stage as the new Japanese girl group kiOra marks a major milestone before even dropping their first official track. The four-member group delivered their first international stage appearance as the opening act at the Central Music and Entertainment Festival 2026 in Kuala Lumpur at the Zepp festival venue on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026. The performance is already generating massive buzz among Pinoy J-pop fans looking for the next big global sound.
During the energetic live show, the group announced that the official music video for their highly anticipated debut single, “Coco,” will premiere worldwide on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, to coincide with the digital release of the song. The group describes their signature style as “Tokyo Hyper City Pop,” a unique musical blend that fuses the high-energy elements of hyperpop with the melodic charm of classic city pop. The girls first introduced this concept earlier this year at the Head in the Clouds Music and Arts Festival in Tokyo.
Exclusive previews and schedule changes
To celebrate the upcoming release, fans attending the Head in the Clouds Music and Arts Festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Los Angeles, will get an exclusive advance screening of the music video on Aug. 8, 2026, ahead of the global premiere. However, organizers noted that kiOra had to cancel their scheduled live performance at the Los Angeles event due to unforeseen circumstances.
Despite the cancellation, the members expressed massive gratitude for their recent milestone. Oto shared that singing their first song together with the crowd was an amazing experience, while Kyla urged fans to get ready to watch the upcoming video. Ruka and Yu added that they were energized by the cheers from their first overseas performance and hope to share their music with more people around the world.
A heavy-hitting global production team
The creation of “Coco” brought together a massive lineup of international talent. The tracks were shaped by four accomplished producers and songwriters: her0ism, Yaeji, Mechatok, and Kanata Okajima. Producer her0ism has been involved with the project since its inception and is widely known for collaborating with top global artists such as Lisa of Blackpink, XG, and Arashi. The production team also features Yaeji, the globally acclaimed artist and disc jockey who recently drew massive attention for her official remix of Hikaru Utada’s “Mine or Yours.”
Berlin and London-based producer Mechatok brought his distinct hyperpop expertise to the project, following his previous work with V8 of Seventeen and FKA twigs. Foremost Japanese songwriter Kanata Okajima, who has penned hits for BTS and Namie Amuro, also joined the core team. As production progressed, Los Angeles-based songwriter Chelsea Warner joined the lineup, with recording taking place at StudioBeat3 under multi-platinum engineer Irko and vocal director Ashley Alish.
The single itself focuses on a powerful theme. The title draws inspiration from the phrase “in my core,” combined with the Japanese words “ima coco,” which translate to “here and now.” The track serves as an anthem for listeners to find the courage to move forward before they feel fully ready.
The digital single “Coco” officially launches on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. Fans can secure their access early by visiting the official pre-save link.
