LRT-1 Cavite extension opens November to ease traffic, relieve commuters

MANILA, Philippines – Good news for commuters in Southern Metro Manila: five new stations of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension are set to open by the end of November 2024.

According to an ABS-CBN News article by Art Fuentes, This will be a significant development for daily passengers, as the extended line will make travel faster and more efficient.

Coming off of a PCO Press Briefing held on November 7, Fuentes writes that these five new stations, part of Phase 1 of the Cavite Extension project, include:

  • Redemptorist Station
  • MIA Station
  • Asia World (PITX) Station
  • Ninoy Aquino Station
  • Dr. Santos (Sucat) Station

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista confirmed that the stations would be operational within the next two to three weeks. The LRT-1 will extend by 6 kilometers, bringing the total length to 26 kilometers.

Fuentes further writes that Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the company that operates LRT-1, expects the new stations to increase the ridership by up to 80,000 daily, pushing the total number of daily passengers to 400,000. The company anticipates that this number will grow to 650,000 by 2028 or 2029.

The expansion is expected to dramatically improve the daily commute. With travel time cut by up to 30 minutes from Baclaran to Santos Avenue, passengers will be able to reach their destinations much faster, making their daily routines more efficient.

According to Fuentes, this is also the first railway project completed under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. While the government has yet to announce the timeline for the next phases of the project, including Las Piñas, Zapote, and Niog Stations in Cavite, this new development is certainly a step forward for the country’s public transportation system.
