Manila Zoo fire alarms animal lovers

MANILA, Philippines – A fire hit Manila Zoo on Malate, Manila last Tuesday night.

According to an alert by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in Twitter, the fire reached 2nd alarm as of 9:51 p.m and was declared all clear at around 10:12 PM.

According to reports, the fire happened at the zoo’s canteen at around 9:47 PM. The reason behind the fire was electrical malfunction.

“Senior Fire 0fficer 2 Enrico Cruz of Manila’s Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire razed the ticketing booth and the canteen near the entrance of the zoo,” based on the report of ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report noted: “Based on initial investigation, an electric stove used by stay-in zookeepers started the fire.”

Fortunately, no casualties were reported and all animals were saved. The damages cost around PHP100,000.

Some netizens who are animal lovers were alarmed on the incident.

Manila Zoo, which was opened in 1969, is home to about a thousand animals from 90 species. It is also known as Manila Zoological Garden and has an area of 5.5 hectares.

Manila zoo improved their facilities last 2012 and added a Kinder Zoo.
