What could be cool than receiving a whole lot of entries for an amateur short video competition spearheaded by a top TV network?
Star Magic’s first-ever video-making competition, Lights, Camera, Magic has proven the abundance of amateur yet globally competitive video creators as it successfully received 220 entries on its first run.
LCM’s two-month submission period boasts of receiving different genres ofvideos not only from various parts of the country, but also from other corners of the globe like Canada, UAE, Thailand, Libya, US and Germany.Judged based on originality, creative and technical execution and impact, the 20 shortlisted videos range from drama, thriller, rom-com, horror, science fiction and musical.
Of these promising entries, the screening committee composed of Piolo Pascual, Nash Aguas, Khalil Ramos, Janus del Prado, Ketchup Eusebio, Renee Dominique and Star Magic’s very own, Johnny Manahan, chose the 20 videos, which will be advancing to the next round of deliberation.
The Top 20 Reveal Day was hosted by the ever busy and sought after Robi Domingo. We missed Khalil Ramos was unable to make it among the exciting batch of Selection Committee members who were there to show support for the amateur short film directors.
The top 20 videos are “Ako,” “Anino,” “Antipara,” “Best Friends,”“Contrition As A Forceful Act,” “Hello, DJ Eros?” “Hello Nanay,” “Isang Gabi Lang ‘Yon,” “Karamay,”“Kasarinlan,” “Liwanag,”“Malampasan Mo Sana AngSakit,” “NapanoKa, Arna?” “Ngawa,” “Oh, AkingKatoto,” “Pala’u” “Plot Twist,”“Static,” “Viral Kids,” and “Walang Mali.”
The video creators whose works got shortlisted were aged between 18 to 42 years old.
One finalist flew all the way from Canada just to be at Top 20 Reveal Day. Woot Woot!
One of the lucky but deserving Top 20 entry came from Kapamilya actor Raphael Robes, whose work, "Karamay" got the thumbs up too.
Vote for his short film #LCMKaramay at lightscameramagic.ph for it to land in the Top 3.
LCM’s three finalists would then be selectedfrom the top 20 via online voting and by the LCM jury. Chosen based on their expertise and experience, the jury are composed of industry pioneers namely: Leo Katigbak, Head of ABS-CBN’s Special Projects and Film Restoration, Ronald Arguelles head of Channel Management—Cinema One and Velvet channels, and Ice Idanan, independent film director of “Sakaling Hindi Makarating,” “Ania ‘tinaganmo” and “LimangLibo.”
LCM mentors and directors JP Habac (“I’m Drunk I Love You,” “Maria” and “Oktopus” upcoming movies “SakalingMagingTayo”), Victor Villanueva (“Patay Na Si Hesus,” “Kusina Kings,” “AngNanay Ni Justin Barber” and “Abot-kamay”) and Mikhail Red (“Birdshot,” “Neomanila,” and “Rekorder” upcoming movies “Eerie” and “Block Z”) are also taking part in the selection of the final three.
Voting for the3 finalists is ongoing at lightscameramagic.ph.
The 3 finalists would be receiving P50,000 in cash and would have the full experience of developing their submitted entries into a 15-minute short video for digital entertainment; while being mentored by one of the three aforementioned young directors and with Star Magic artists as their videos’ headlining stars.
