DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is now running in Control and Forza Horizon 6 on RTX 5090

The first unofficial gameplay of NVIDIA’s next-generation DLSS 5 Neural Rendering surfaced online within hours of the runtime DLL being discovered in the NBA 2K27 early-access build, after members of the RenoDX modding community managed to load the new library into Control and apply it to the game’s character models.

The unlock demonstrates that the modder scene can now experiment with the same neural-rendering pipeline NVIDIA plans to ship to developers later this year, weeks before any official toolchain exists. NVIDIA officially plans to release DLSS 5 this fall for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, with controls that let developers apply Neural Rendering selectively to scenes and individual objects.

What actually leaked

The story starts on August 26, when the NBA 2K27 early-access build shipped with a previously unseen library called nvngx_dlssnr.dll. Windows identifies the 158 MB file as “NVIDIA DLSSNR” version 310.8.0.0, with an August 26, 2026 modification date. The filename matches NVIDIA’s existing “DLSS-NR” naming for Neural Rendering, and the file is roughly 3x larger than the equivalent DLSS 4 library. The same file also appears in NBA 2K27’s official feature set, which we covered earlier.

At the time of the DLL discovery, there was no known way to use the library outside of NVIDIA’s planned implementation. That changed within hours. Members of the RenoDX modding community, working through the project’s Discord, loaded the DLSSNR library into Control. The clearest demonstration applies Neural Rendering to Jesse Faden’s character model, and the user can switch between several controls in real time. The modders report seven available styles, though the current implementation only affects character models in this test build.

Source clips from the Discord were reposted publicly by X user SwurvGaming, and additional screenshot comparisons circulated within hours of the DLL being indexed.

Why this mod is not a finished DLSS 5

There are several reasons not to treat this as a finished DLSS 5 mod. The implementation has not yet been added to a public RenoDX release, and the controls available today are limited. HDR is also not working correctly, with current testing focused on SDR while the developers investigate how the new model expects its image data.

What makes the experiment interesting is how little data the model appears to require. According to RenoDX contributor speedlemur, the current implementation seems to use the same inputs already available to regular DLSS upscaling. However, the Neural Rendering pass currently runs late in the pipeline, after upscaling and possibly after tone mapping. On an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K, the developer described the current implementation as effectively unusable and measured an almost 50 percent performance loss in one test.

The discussion also references A Hat in Time receiving the experimental DLSS 5 treatment. That is interesting because it is an older DirectX 9 game, rather than one of NVIDIA’s announced DLSS 5 titles. RenoDX developers also believe Unreal Engine 5 games may be relatively easy targets if Neural Rendering can continue using data already exposed for DLSS and Ray Reconstruction.

What is actually shipping this fall

DLSS 5 will land exclusively on the GeForce RTX 50 Series, the same generation that has been selling in the Philippines since 2025.

NVIDIA officially plans to release DLSS 5 this fall for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, with developers receiving controls that can apply Neural Rendering selectively to scenes and individual objects. The unlock does not represent NVIDIA’s finished DLSS 5 integration, performance, or image quality. It is, however, the first public evidence that the DLSSNR runtime shipped in 2K27 is real, functional, and broadly compatible with the existing RenoDX modding pipeline.

Hours after the RenoDX Control demo circulated, a second public showcase of DLSS 5 Neural Rendering appeared on the YouTube channel The Horizon Vault. The clip, titled “NVIDIA DLSS 5 Neural Rendering on Forza Horizon 6 – RTX 5090,” is the first demo of the technology applied to a driving game rather than a character model. Together, the two videos show that the DLSSNR runtime is not a one-off trick: it can be pointed at characters, cars, and presumably most of the surfaces that show up in modern games, all on the same RTX 5090 hardware that the finished feature will ship on.

For modders, the immediate question is how much of the Neural Rendering pass NVIDIA will lock behind official developer tools, and how much will remain accessible to community projects built on top of the public DLSS runtime. For NVIDIA, the bigger question is whether the company will treat this kind of early experimentation as a leak to be plugged, or as free validation of a feature the company still has not officially announced.

Either way, DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is now the first part of NVIDIA’s next-generation upscaler to be put in front of real players, in a real game, on a real RTX 50 Series GPU, more than a month before its official release window.
